Saline Or Silicone For Breast Enhancement
After fifteen years of debate and scientific research, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved silicone filled implants for women in the U.S. that are at least twenty two years or older. This is a big deal, as the silicone breast implants were banned by the same FDA in 1992 as unsafe, due to the silicone-gel leaking from the implant.
Saline breast implants have been available during most of the period that the silicone-gel filled breast implants were banned. Albeit, for women eighteen years and older. Obviously, they became the choice for women’s breast augmentation. A plus for the saline breast implants is that they have a more flexible volume that can be filled, as this done during the augmentation procedure.
The reason that many women, not to mention silicone-gel filled breast implant manufacturers, wanted the ban rescinded is that they said that silicone-gel filled implants feel more like real breasts. Even so, there seem to be more risks involved with the silicone-gel implants.
Here are some comparisons:
Saline breast implants are filled with saline during the augmentation process, thus resulting in a smaller incision. Silicone-gel breast implants are filled at the manufacturers and, therefore, require a bigger incision.
If the saline breast implant leaks, the saline is absorbed into the body. The resulting “flat tire” implant has to be replaced. The silicone-gel filled breast implant leaks into the body as well, but it happens at a slower rate than a saline implant. Due to this “silent” leaking, the FDA recommends that these women have an MRI performed every two years so that they can detect any “silent” leaking.
Both the saline breast implant and the gel filled implant’s shell are made of a firmer silicone elastomer.
With either option, there are many reasons for women to have breast augmentation surgery. It might have to do with a mastectomy, differing breast sizes, wanting a larger breast size or just wanting to combat aging. Many of the women that had breast augmentation surgery have said that they have a better body image. In line with that, many women have said that their self confidence has grown, along with the positive view of their self image. They have also said that their sex lives have improved dramatically. To round it all out, many said that their overall quality of life was greatly enhanced, due to the breast enhancement surgery.
The bottom line is that you only want to choose breast augmentation surgery for positive reasons. You also have to be one hundred percent positive that you want the procedure. You also need to consult with a physician and do some research. You want to make the choice only if it makes you feel better about yourself, be it silicone-gel filled or saline.
The one choice that you can’t make in the USA involves soy filled implants. These were banned because risk of infection upon rupture was too high. In addition, some complained of an unpleasant odor.
