Radiesse: A Revolutionary Wrinkle Treatment

Radiesse, formerly known as Radiance, is a revolutionary wrinkle treatment involving injection of dermal filler under the skin. It reduces the appearance of wrinkles and skin folds around the mouth and nose area and is particularly good for treating deep facial creases, such as forehead frown marks. Radiesse also fills in scars or depressions caused by scarring. The filler is biocompatible, non-allergenic, and non-toxic, as well as long lasting.
Youthful, healthy skin contains collagen, which gives skin its elasticity, volume and strength. In the course of the aging process, the skin’s natural collagen breaks down, diminishing skin elasticity and volume and leading to wrinkles, facial lines and lax, droopy skin. One highly effective way of reversing the aging process and reducing these skin problems is to replenish the lost collagen. Radiesse works to stimulate collagenesis, or the production of new collagen. After Radiesse is injected beneath the skin, it both smooths wrinkles and stimulates collagen production, leading to skin rejuvenation.
The Radiesse procedure is done in the doctor’s office, usually on the same day as the consultation. Because of the biocompatibility factor of Radiesse, there is no need to wait for allergy test results. The procedure is also short, taking about 15 minutes depending upon the extent of treatment. Total cost also depends on the extent of treatment, as several areas of the face may be involved. Typically, the cost for Radiesse ranges from $650-$800 per syringe.
The procedure is simple and relatively pain-free. After an application of a local, or topical, anesthetic, an ultrafine needle is used for the injection. The doctor selects the injection points, chooses the accurate amount of Radiesse for the each location to be treated and then injects the filler underneath the dermis and subcutaneous skin layers. Though there may be some discomfort, the anesthetic will help numb the feeling. Minimal swelling may occur, but it subsides within 24-36 hours. There is no limit on daily activities, though patients are instructed to stay out of the sun. Complications are rare, though one possible complication is the appearance of nodules that would need either surgical or steroid treatments.
Some improvement will be immediately visible. Over the following days and weeks, further change gradually appears with the stimulation of new collagen production. The results are long-term, lasting at least a year, perhaps 2 years, although there might be need for touch-ups in that time.
