Oil Pump Jack Amputations

Oil pump jacks are found throughout much of the country, working to bring out oil from a well when the pressure is not sufficient to naturally drive the liquid to the surface. These pump jacks often work off of automatic timers and are not generally manned when in use. As a result, these machines may be left to operate in the open. This can make these machines particularly dangerous for children who may play around the pump jack.

A pump jack is a heavy piece of machinery that works with high pressure pumping pistons. If a child can easily reach one of these machines, that young person can become severely injured. These machines do not have any kind of reliable safety system in place to prevent a crushing injury. A child who comes in contact with a piston or other moving part may lose a finger or a limb to these machines.

It is the responsibility of the pump jack’s owner to provide sufficient warning for these machines. This includes posting sufficient warning signs that let children know that danger is imminent. Additionally, the owner of the pump jack should construct a fence that keeps the machine clearly off-limits from any intruders.
