Filing Fees for SR-22 Forms

When a person loses their license to the state, they need to show proof of financial responsibility before they can get their license restored. This process requires the individual in question to purchase high-risk insurance. Once they buy a policy, the insurer can send a form known as an SR-22. This form tells the government that the policy holder has purchased insurance and is financially prepared to get back on the road. The government will then release that individual’s license.

This process includes a fee assessed on the basis of state regulations. The fee is charged as a filing fee. In the state of Illinois, the government generally charges $50 for each SR-22 filed with the state. This fee amount is not fixed in all situations. Some individuals may need to pay more for their SR-22 filing depending on the circumstances of their form filing.

A filing fee is paid on the basis of each SR-22 filed. This means that a person in a household that requires multiple SR-22 forms for license restoration will need to pay this fee multiple times. However, the fee only needs to be paid once per policy. There is no renewal fee attached to SR-22 filing. The only instance when a person needs to pay for the fee again is if they lapse on their existing policy.
