A current trend in marketing websites right now is optimizing images in a website for image search in Google. Through this method, images placed on a website needs to be labeled accurately with the use of image tags. Of course the content of the website, its relation to the image, the meta tags and the title also play key roles in the overall optimization of images.

Here are several ways to optimize the images in your website:

1. Incorporate keywords to your Alt text. Keywords are essential in SEO so in optimizing images, make sure that your Alt text includes key words or phrases that are highly relevant to the picture and the webpage.

2. Naming your images is also an important part of optimizing it for Google Images. Make sure you use descriptive texts that include your keywords as a title to the image. For instance, when you are putting in a picture of a Christmas tree, you can use the file name “Christmas-tree.jpg”.

3. Your title and meta tags should also be part of the optimization. Any SEO professionals know that these tags are very important in optimizing the whole website. Make sure that the keywords for the title tag, meta tag and image should be the same so the picture in your site could rank better in images searches.

4.  Where to put the image in your site should also be considered. Ideally, pictures should be placed in between texts. If possible, a descriptive text with the keywords should be written right before or after the picture.

5. Use the Google Webmaster Tools to optimize the pictures in your website. Select the ‘enhanced image search’ that can be found on the Diagnostics tab. Make sure you click on the checkbox to opt into the Google Image Search for your site.

6. Keep the pictures fresh and relevant to your content. If your website is focused on highly popular subject matter, make sure you don’t keep the same picture for a long time. Taking down the original picture and uploading a new one that is similarly relevant to the keywords in your site will refresh its ranking in the image search.

7. It is also important that the pictures you upload to your website comply with the standards of Google Images. Make sure that the height, width, title tag and alt tag of the image follow the parameters indicated in the image reference in Google.

8. Monitor the indexed images in your website. You can use the Webmaster Tools to determine this. It is important that you are aware of how many images are indexed from your website so you can make necessary changes to increase image traffic.
