Expensive Jewels of the World

Jewels have been a fascinating topic for centuries. Originally coveted for their medicinal and shamanic powers, they were eventually desired simply for their natural beauty. Today, they are more accessible than ever. Let’s look at a few.

Garnet

Garnets have colors ranging from green to deep purple, but the most well-known are the reds. The demantoid garnet in any color is considered the most valuable because of its rarity. The average price ranges from $100 to $3600 per carat depending on the color and the rarity. Garnets are January’s birthstone and represent the second wedding anniversary.

Aquamarine

The colors of the aquamarine range from almost white to deep sea blue. The highest value is placed on the deepest blue stones; the average price range is $140 to $1400 per carat. March claims this gem as its birthstone and it is given to celebrate the 19th anniversary.

Diamond

Diamonds come in a surprising variety of colors besides that commonly seen in jewelry stores. Blue, yellow, red, black, and pink are just few of the naturally occurring colors. Blue is the rarest and most valuable. The price range per carat is $2250 to $2700. Diamonds are the birthstone for April and are the gift of choice for the 60th anniversary.

Emerald

The most valuable emeralds are almost translucent. The color range is a light to very deep, dark green. The cost per carat can range from $1400 to $4500. This gem is usually given as a 20-year anniversary gift and is the birthstone for May.

Ruby

Rubies range from purplish red to a deep, rich red. Naturally occurring rubies are very rare, so those are the most valuable. This jewel is the birthstone for July and represents 40 years of marriage. The price range is $1224 to $2050 per carat.

Sapphire

Surprisingly, sapphires come in than blue, which is actually the rarest–and the most valuable. Some of the other colors are orange, green, and purple. The carat price ranges from $192 to $1025. September claims Sapphire as its birthstone and it marks 45 years of marriage.

Tourmaline

The color range of the tourmaline is between black and yellow, with blue being extremely rare. Blue has the highest value as is demonstrated with the price range per carat: $50 to $30,000. This jewel is the birthstone for October and celebrates the eighth anniversary.

Topaz

The most valuable topaz has a pink to reddish hue; colors range from colorless to sherry wine. Carat prices are between $12 and $2500. Topaz is the birthstone for November. Blue represents the fourth anniversary and yellow represents 23 years.

These are only the tip of the iceberg; there are plenty more gems to be had!
