Bar Quizzes
In England, pub quizzes are a popular form of entertainment. Usually one night a week, a pub will host quiz night, in which people gather in teams to answer a series of questions. It varies from pub to pub, but typically a question is read out loud and then teams record their answers on a piece of paper, which is handed in at the end of the round and graded. The team with the most points by the end of the game usually gets some sort of prize, such as a free round of drinks. Many people enjoy pub quiz in the UK, and now it’s becoming more and more popular in the United States as well.
Though not offered at every bar, a number of places now have bar quizzes. They can be found under a variety of different names, sometimes being called pub quiz, bar trivia, or trivia night. Some places will feature a certain theme of trivia on some evenings. You might go on a night that has music trivia, which often involves playing song clips that you have to name the song or artist. Movie trivia or sports trivia is popular as well. The traditional bar quiz, though, has different rounds with a different category for each round. You might get a few questions on sports, then some on history, then some on music, and so forth.
One of the things that makes bar quizzes so much fun is that it’s a fairly casual, laid back atmosphere. While there is an element of competition, everyone is just there to have a good time. Players are drinking beers while playing and laughing and joking in between rounds. Many people also get some snacks or meals to enjoy while playing trivia. There will occasionally be some good natured ribbing between teams.
Of course, the real prize is being able to say that your team was the winner for the week, but in addition to the glory that you get there are sometimes other prizes handed out as well. Occasionally there will be a free round of drinks for the winning team, or t-shirts, pint glasses, or other fun items to take home with you.
Bar quizzes vary depending on the bar that is holding the trivia event, so make sure you know what to expect when you go. Some have limits on how many people you can have per team. Some have a quiz master running the evening, while others use technology and interactive games to ask the questions. No matter what type of trivia night you go to though, you’re bound to have a good time!
