Assisted Living: Options and Choices

Growing old is a part of life, and as you grow old you must consider an alternative to how you are currently living. There are many options for a senior including, but not limited to independent living, assisted living, as well as a nursing facility. When you choose which one is right for you or a loved one you must consider all options.

Independent living is good for seniors that are still mobile and strong. There are two types of options for a senior that is living independently. One option is in a facility and the other is at home. Independent living facilities are very neat because an elderly person has their own apartment in a building complex. The senior is around people who have things they have in common. When you live alone as a senior you are in full control of your life. The elderly person may own their own car. For the most part the independent seniors are in top-notch physical condition though, they make require some outside assistance. At these senior complexes there is no on duty staff to help out.

Assisted living situations give the elderly person the opportunity to live alone, but still have some sort of help. The staff at these facilities only come when you need them. Usually in a nursing home the staff come to check on you more frequently than they would in an assisted living facility. For example, at an assisted living facility if you have trouble getting in and out of the tub someone will come when its time and help you in the bathroom. Assisted living facilities are to help you get through your day-to-day activities but still give you some sort of freedom. At these facilities there is usually a restaurant, a bank, a hair dresser, as well as fun activities.

Finding a great nursing home can be a pain and a nightmare. Sometimes there can be three to four people in a room with three to four different issues. The person has no real personal space that they probably once had. There are single occupancy rooms available but these are often expensive and hard to come by. Resident s almost never have their own cars. Another, con to a nursing home is often times the food isn’t that good. Nursing homes do have fun activities like bingo and religious sessions. When you are in a nursing home there is a team of people on duty 24/7 to take care of you. The team of people who are available to you are nurses, physical therapist, counselors, doctors, hair dressers, as well as certified nursing assistants. It is good to do lots of research on a nursing home because sometimes the help at these facilities can be brutal. A certified nursing assistant has to clean up an elderly person if they soil themselves. Even though they get paid to take of the residents they are still sometimes mean and nasty because they do not want to clean up the mess. This is not true about all nursing homes this is just an example of what can happen. Nursing homes are around to do everything that the elderly person needs.
Senior Living can be easy as long as you choose wisely.
