Why Choose a Glandular-Based Adrenal Supplement?
If you are feeling exhausted for no reason or are overly stressed, you may have a condition known as adrenal fatigue. Your adrenal glands release hormones responsible for important bodily functions, and when they don’t function properly, you can develop a number of health conditions. A glandular-based adrenal supplement might improve and eventually normalize your adrenal function, according to Dr. Michael Lam.
Adrenal Gland Functions
Found over the kidneys, the adrenal glands regulate body processes, including:
• Controlling blood sugar levels
• Regulating the balance of bodily fluids and electrolytes
• Reducing inflammation
• Secreting stress-activated hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol
• Producing energy by converting carbohydrates, proteins and fats to blood glucose
• Storing fat
Glandular Therapy
Glandular therapy is based on research during the 1920s by Swiss physician Paul Niehans. Glandular supplements are made from animal glandular and non-glandular tissues or tissue extracts that are usually dried and ground-up. Glandular therapy is the basis for modern-day prescription hormone treatment. Although insufficient scientific proof exists, 80 years of antidotal evidence indicates that, if used properly, “there is little doubt that glandulars do possess healing properties,” according to Dr. Lam. The best glandulars, says Lam, come from organic cows raised in New Zealand.
Adrenal Fatigue
Dr. James L. Wilson, in 1998, originated the term “adrenal fatigue” to specify a chronic feeling of tiredness. Adrenal fatigue results from the damaging effects of mental, emotional and physical stress on the function of the adrenal gland. Although, it is thought that around 80% of people experience the symptoms of adrenal fatigue, it is a disorder often not accepted by the traditional medical community. Wilson says that what is referred to a “nervous breakdown” is actually adrenal fatigue caused by a multitude of factors relating to stress, including sleep deprivation. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include:
• Morning fatigue and mid-afternoon fatigue
• Burst of energy at 6 p.m.
• Sleepiness, but a failure to sleep at about 9:00 p.m., with another energy boost at 11:00 p.m.
• Mild depression and a lack of energy
• Muscular weakness and frequent sighing
Effects
Many patients with mild adrenal fatigue experience a boost of energy and a sense of calmness after taking an adrenal glandular supplement; however, this supplement acts as a stimulant in those with advanced adrenal fatigue. Due to potential side effects, Dr. Lam recommends that a glandular-based adrenal supplement should only be taken for a short period of time by those with mild symptoms of this disorder.
Taking a glandular-based adrenal supplement may help repair your adrenal glands and give you the energy you need to start your day early as well as provide you with an abundance of sustained energy throughout the day. However, consult your doctor before beginning any new supplement.
