Pet Tarantulas

In the world of obscure and uncommon pets, there is one pet that gives owners a unique and enjoyable pet-owning experience without hassle or stress. And even though many people admit to having a small or even large case of arachnophobia, tarantulas can be a rewarding pet if taken care of properly. Before purchasing a pet tarantula, you should learn everything you can about the species and pick the one that best suits you.

With over 800 different species, choosing a tarantula can be overwhelming. The best tarantulas for beginners are those that burrow because they are typically slower species. Some of the best ground dweller species or beginners include the Chilean Rose, Costa Rican Zebra, and the Mexican Redknee.

What You Should Know

As with any pet, and especially a spider, there are dangers. Most professionals advise against holding tarantulas because they do have a venomous bite that may cause a local reaction with pain, redness, and swelling, but they have also been known to be fatal. Also, a tarantula’s hair can become sharp and rigid, causing minor irritations. Some other basic tips for caring for your tarantula include:

  • If you can, purchase a female tarantula because they live longer
  • Its cage should be at least three times its leg span long and two times as wide
  • Store in a dark area of the room away from incandescent light
  • If you do handle it, be careful not to drop the tarantula because the fall could be fatal
  • A typical diet is crickets or other small insects once a week

These wild animals can be a great pet if you are responsible and treat him or her with respect.
