Gastric Torsion and Dog Care
Dog owners need to be aware of how their dog is feeling or if they are showing any signs of strange behavior at all times so they can catch any potentially dangerous illnesses before they progress in to something worse. There are many medical conditions that many dog owners may not even be aware exist. For example, many dog owners are unaware that their dog may be at risk of developing Gastric Torsion, or Bloat, if they perform seemingly routine activities.
Gastric Torsion is a life-threatening condition that targets dogs with deep chests. Also called “inverted stomach”, Gastric Torsion happens when a dog’s stomach fills with a lot of liquid or gas and then after the dog exercises, his or her stomach can partially turn or even fully rotate. If you suspect your dog is suffering from Gastric Torsion, get him or her to an emergency veterinarian immediately.
Symptoms of Gastric Torsion
You need to keep an eye on the amount of food and water your dog consumes, and the rate at which he or she consumes it. Your dog is at an elevated risk of Gastric Torsion when he or she exercises immediately after consuming a large amount of dried food or water. Some of the most common symptoms of this condition are:
- Signs of weakness, including an inability to stand up or move
- An unusual amount of drool as well as constant dry heaving
- Rapid breathing and pain in the abdomen when you touch it
Time is of the essence if your dog is experiencing any of these symptoms. Get him or her to the nearest veterinarian clinic immediately.
