Denver Dog Bite Injuries

Most people love animals, but sometimes animals can become violent and cause physical damage.  Nearly 5 million people are bitten by dogs every year in the United States, and these injuries can be very serious.  Sometimes dogs are naturally violent, but they also occasionally just become scared or defensive of their owners, which may cause them to bite someone.  However, an owner can still be held financially responsible for the damages caused by the dog’s bite.

Winning a Dog Bite Case

Colorado has a strict dog bite law that typically makes dog owners accountable if their dog bites another person. As required by Colorado law, in order to receive compensation for a dog bite claim against a dog and its owner, a person must prove one or more of the following:

  • that the owner exhibited intentional or negligent conduct
  • that the owner violated a dangerous dog law or a leash law
  • that the owner knew that the dog was violent and bought it anyway

Not all three of these provisions must be proven in order to win a claim in a dog bite case, but at least one must.

Dangerous Breeds

Some dogs are more dangerous than others, and some are more prone to violence than others as well.  Some of the more “aggressive breeds” of dogs include:

  • Rottweilers
  • Pit Bulls
  • German Shepherds
  • Doberman Pinschers

Because these dogs are often more aggressive than other breeds, owners should be aware of their potential to cause physical harm to someone and make sure that they are secured from such violence.
