South Mission Beach: Visiting Old Town State Park
A great place for any beach-loving vacationer, South Mission Beach is special for a number of reasons. One such reason is its proximity to San Diego. One of the attractions that makes South Mission Beach and San Diego family-friendly is Old Town. Old Town is a protected historical park.
This park pays tribute to the origins of San Diego, and thus the surrounding area. A small military outpost at the top of a bluff, San Diego Presidio was founded in 1769. In the 1820s, a town started to grow around the base of the bluff, the site commemorated by Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
Historic Old Town
Historic old town is like going back in time. Many of the buildings and traditions commemorated here date back between 1820-1870. The attractions include:
- Five original adobes
- San Diego’s first newspaper office
- First San Diego Courthouse
- Blacksmiths and other artisans
Old town attempts to recreate San Diego at a time of transition, from the very end of its Mexican period to its early American period. In 1972, Old Town lost its dominance as downtown moved to “New Town,” or the modern-day downtown San Diego.
